The wacky rig is about as simple as bass fishing gets: hook a stick bait or finesse worm through the middle, cast it out and let it fall. Both ends shimmy on the way down, and that slow, quivering fall gets bit by pressured bass that ignore faster baits. Because the bait does most of the work, the hook matters more than you might think. It has to be sharp enough to stick fish on light line, strong enough not to bend on a big bass, and the right style for the cover you're fishing.

This guide sorts the wacky and Neko hooks in our price data into four groups: open (exposed point) hooks for clean water, weedless hooks for wood and grass, weighted heads for fishing deeper, and Neko hooks plus the keepers and weights that go with them. Every pick uses the maker's own product information and a live price. Where a maker doesn't publish a spec (sizes, pack counts, wire diameter), we say so instead of guessing.

Quick picks

How to pick a wacky rig hook

Open or weedless? An exposed point hooks fish with the least effort, which is why most anglers start there in open water, around docks and over clean bottom. The trade-off is snags. If you're skipping under bushes, working laydowns or fishing near grass, a weed guard saves baits and reties, at the cost of a slightly firmer hook set.

Weighted or unweighted? A standard wacky rig is fished weightless, so the bait falls slowly and naturally. That's ideal from the bank to roughly mid-depth. When you need to get down faster, fish deeper or punch the bait through vegetation, a weighted wacky head or a nail weight in one end of the bait (which turns it into a Neko rig) helps.

Wacky vs Neko. A wacky rig hooks the bait in the middle with no weight, so both ends move. A Neko rig puts a weight in one end of the bait and the hook near the middle, so the weighted end ticks along the bottom while the other end stands up and quivers. Neko hooks are built to stay exposed and aligned for that presentation.

Protect your baits. Soft stick baits tear easily when hooked straight through. An O-ring or a plastic keeper slid onto the middle of the bait gives the hook something to grab, so you get more fish per bait.

The Masterclass Dome Neko Weight goes into one end of the bait. Its exposed dome head shifts weight forward for a more consistent fall and better bottom feel, and barbed ridges lock it into the plastic so it doesn't slip out on casts and hook sets. 6th Sense lists 1/8 oz (8 per pack), 3/16 oz (8 per pack) and 5/16 oz (6 per pack) options, and says it works for Neko rigs and modified wacky rigs.

Neko Keeper

Best bait saver: 6th Sense Fishing (ET) Neko Keeper

The Neko Keeper is a plastic keeper you push through the body of the bait to give the hook a reinforced anchor point. 6th Sense says it extends bait life even after multiple hook sets or short bites, and its multi-hole design lets you pick the hole that gives the best alignment for your worm's thickness. It's made for both Neko and wacky rigs.

It comes in 4, 5 and 6 inch sizes and also works on Texas and Carolina rigs.

Pinner Worm

Best finesse worm for wacky: Googan Squad Pinner Worm

$5.99 at Googan Squad (price as of November 2, 2026, 9:04 AM PT)

A 5.5 inch finesse worm with 360 degrees of texture for a subtle, undulating action. Googan says it works for drop shot, Texas and wacky rigs, and the molded clamshell packaging keeps the baits straight.

A simple wacky rig setup

1. Slide an O-ring or keeper onto the middle of a stick bait (or just past the middle for a Neko rig). 2. Run the hook under the O-ring or through the keeper, point facing up toward the line, so the bait stays intact. 3. Fish it weightless on a spinning rod in open water. Cast, let it fall on a slack line and watch for the line to jump or swim off. 4. Snags or wood? Switch to a weedless wacky hook. Deeper water or wind? Switch to a weighted wacky head, or add a Neko weight to one end and use a Neko hook.

We searched every wacky, Neko and finesse hook in our daily price data from Googan Squad, Berkley and 6th Sense, kept in-stock options under $10, and covered open, weedless, weighted and Neko styles plus the keepers, weights and baits you need to fish them. Product claims come from each maker's own description. Prices update at every build.
